It’s widely known that switching from the Individual Contributor (IC) track to the Manager track is a career change — requiring the development of an entirely new skillset. But, what we don’t talk about as much is the next step in that progression: moving from managing ICs to managing managers. It’s an advancement that can feel less like a linear progression and more like a step function change.
