Just last month, consulting giant McKinsey sparked a fierce debate by boldly declaring that, yes, you can measure software developer productivity, drawing battle lines between those who know why it’s so difficult to do, and those who can’t understand why software engineering is different from every other business function.

This summer, we spoke to dozens of engineering managers from the likes of Etsy, Shopify, and Stripe.

And we surveyed more than 600 engineering managers to find out how they go about the task, what challenges they typically face, and how they can better align their team’s work with the goals of the business.
