About The Role

This engineering management role focuses on managing a high functioning, talented engineering team and participating in overall product delivery. Applicants would be comfortable playing a mix of roles, including management and coaching, partnering with product management, and technical contribution and guidance.

The person who performs this role will lead and grow an engineering team focused on enabling any HashiCorp engineering team to confidently operate and deliver HashiCorp’s products.

We are seeking a Senior Principal Engineer to guide the evolution of our technology as we scale every part of our business.

Reporting to the VP of Platform, you will serve as the chief architect for Peloton. This is not a whiteboard role, but a hands-on engineer-as-leader who will team with the most senior engineers and engineering leaders across Peloton to help us navigate some big questions. Here are just a few of the challenges you will help us with in your first year: What is the best architecture to move our monolith to unlock parallelism without resulting in toxic fragmentation? What should be included in our developer frameworks to strike the right balance between consistency and innovation? How do we optimize performance end-to-end, from device to backend and data, across multiple product lines and geographies? How do we test at scale, from hardware and streamed content to backend systems, in a hyper-growth environment? When should we build vs buy to optimize time-to-market and  best-in-class experience. How do we create safeguards against vendor lock-in? Additional challenges will be more meta questions, such as: how do we govern architectural direction and decisions across such a multi-disciplined company? Where do we make the right decisions to balance local autonomy and consistency? What tools do we bring to the table for design and decision-making (ADRs, Tech Radars, Architecture Councils, SIGs, etc.)?

This role is a "first-ever" engineering opportunity at Peloton. You will help us evolve not only our technology but also the practice of engineering. Your impact will be widely visible, across Peloton and through our involvement in the tech industry.

You Will

Be a strong engineering voice alongside other leaders through advising and driving Peloton's tech vision and strategy.

• Partner with senior engineers and engineering leadership to define, drive, and evolve engineering craftsmanship and sustainable practices across Peloton for architecture, technology selection, technology decision-making, design, development, and more.
• Represent the discipline of engineering at Peloton in settings, internal and external, where deep knowledge of our tech stack is needed
• Take responsibility for the planning, execution and release of complex technical initiatives that span multiple business units and departments, defining architectural vision and provide leadership for teams for design, sequencing, execution, and problem solving.
• Be a technical leader within Platform, influencing and dring technical investments across teams with a "Platform Thinking" mindset.
• Review designs, tech decisions and code, to ensure they are high quality, efficient, data-driven and documented.
• Find ways to spread learning and knowledge sharing across Platform and Peloton, with a focus on empowering distributed decision making without risking toxic fragmentation. Create structures, forums, and practices to  level-up our engineering practice. Mentoring our most senior engineers in ways to also spread knowledge and balanced technical decision-making .

You Have

• A strong background in platforms, infrastructure, and engineering tooling. You have deep domain knowledge in developer tooling, CI/CD, test infrastructure, network perimeters and  service meshes, orchestration, cloud computing (commodity and managed services) and IAM practices (customer-facing and internal). Experience in IoT, hardware, or firmware is a plus.
• Demonstrated experience working on large scale, distributed infrastructure systems--preferably those undergoing hyper-growth in an environment characterized by rapid change
• Proven knowledge and experience in multiple languages: Python, Go, Java, Scala. You are an excellent communicator and storyteller, communicating concepts and ideas in different formats, depending on context. You can receive feedback while being assertive when needed. You know how to influence decision-making at all levels of the company, working across organizational boundaries using a variety of communication styles and formats. 
• Balanced the ability to design the practice of engineering with the ability to still become hands-on when needed, to ensure decisions and ideas are based on real-world data and practical executability.

The Opportunity

You Will

• Be working on one or more workstreams under Data Platform viz. Change Data Capture, Data Compute Frameworks, Data Modeling, Schemas & Serialization, Data Pipelining & Orchestration, Data Storage, Data Transport & Interoperability, Developer Portal, Data Lake Standards, Data Access & Control.
• Be an enabler and force multiplier to improve  data productivity by building out self-service data systems, services and tools.
• Work with decentralized teams enabling them to create data pipelines and publish golden datasets.
• Write technical specifications and efficient, high quality, well-tested code.

You Have

• You have 2+ years of experience in engineering, especially in data infrastructure and data engineering
• You have experience in a cloud environment like AWS and familiarity with tools like Airflow, Glue, Athena.
• You have experience with Python or Scala and experience working on large distributed systems and frameworks like Spark/ Flink.
• You are passionate and willing to learn about event-driven architecture, microservices , data reliability, data privacy and quality.

We are looking for an engaged and enthusiastic Senior Engineering Manager to lead the Database Engineering Team in Platform's Core Engineering organization. You will join a team where everyone shares a common interest in designing, running and maintaining the largest databases at Peloton--helping grow our platform to power a world class fitness experience.

Our team's mission is to provide databases-as-a-service and an opinionated database layer to guide and support our internal developers. You will engage with peers and internal customers to understand workloads and design, build and operate services and tools to provide a great user experience for engineers interacting with our database layer. Our goal is to make Peloton's persistent database and caching layers scalable, resilient and secure to a point that operational responsibility is a very small burden on our engineers. 

The ideal candidate will have experience working in the domains of backend engineering, infrastructure engineering, database engineering, and site reliability engineering. You will have strong operational knowledge of running SQL and NoSQL databases in the cloud. You will enjoy partnering with other engineering teams to understand their needs, help them scale, and craft a roadmap to reduce operational toil through tooling and automation. What You'll Do

• Be a technical leader within Platform Engineering, influencing and driving technical investments across teams with a "Platform Thinking" mindset. Help others in design, sequencing, execution, and problem solving.

• Partner with internal engineering teams to help others scale and to create tools and automation that reduces the toil of operational responsibility for databases at Peloton

Who You Are

• Have multiple years of experience with working with databases both SQL and NoSQL. Knowledge of CockroachDB, DynamoDB, and Elasticache are a plus
• Well-versed in domains such as Infrastructure-as-Code, Monitoring, Observability, and SLO-based management. Knowledge of Terraform is a plus
• Experienced programming in a language like Python, Golang, Java. You will not code daily but should have the ability to hold a code quality bar on your team.

Python, Java, SQL, Spark and Databricks – you’ll be up to speed with some of them, and keen to build your knowledge on them all. As a skilled Senior Data Engineer, you will be responsible for fully leading the end to end collection of our traveller and business data and converting it into a clear vision of user intent. This will then tackle some of our most complex business problems and optimise the traveller journey. You are used to processing and enhancing large data sets. But while this technical talent is critical, you’ll also need the aim to produce a state of the art platform, using cutting edge technologies.

About the role

Shopify is on a fast-moving mission to make the best products for merchants, buyers, and partners around the globe — and engineers play a vital role in building that future. Here are just some of the stories from the engineering teams who build and scale Shopify.

Our Frontend Engineers in Marketing collaborate closely with designers, content strategists, product managers, data scientists, and our broader marketing teams to build incredible merchant and prospect-facing websites, campaigns, and developer-facing tools. You’ll use the latest web standards in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and work with Ruby on Rails to develop websites and web applications that scale and perform well on all devices. Front End Development exists across all of Shopify, from Product to Marketing, working closely with the teams that create performant experiences and communicate Shopify’s impact on commerce to a global audience. Collaborating with our Data, SEO, and Operations teams to make data-informed decisions, you’ll work on large-scale, multi-language, and localized websites to help drive new merchant acquisition and bring Shopify to audiences around the world.

As a Senior Front End Development Manager in Marketing, you will lead remote teams of Front End Developers that work on campaigns and initiatives across various marketing/social channels and touchpoints. You will lead planning, resourcing, and executing projects, while providing mentorship and creating growth opportunities for your teams. You’ll also collaborate across our leadership teams to help push the disciplines of Front End Development and Marketing User Experience (UX) forward across the company.

 

Qualifications

What you’ll do as a Marketing-focused Senior Frontend Development Manager at Shopify:

• Manage multiple teams and help them prioritize, plan, build, and ship the most impactful projects.
• Work on problems with your teams, roll up your sleeves, form an opinion, and advocate for engineering-specific roadmap items.
• Mentor and lead other managers and independent contributors while also providing growth opportunities. You understand that leadership is a craft, and know how to mentor your team members to help them grow and succeed.
• Help your teams ship exceptional user experiences and establish clear definitions of quality.
• Build accessible, responsive, performant experiences, and educate teams across UX and Marketing on why this matters.
• Evaluate and provide supportive and constructive feedback to your reports. 

 

The right candidate will have:

• Proven senior leadership skills. Your management skills and technical depth allow you to develop and mentor others leads as well as build credibility with your team while executing broader engineering strategies.
• Proven software development background in Web Development, UX, Back End, or Mobile. You feel comfortable diving into the code and interacting with developers at all levels of seniority and have a commitment and drive for quality, technical excellence, and results.
• Experience building responsive, performant, and accessible web experiences that engage audiences through the use of animation and complex interactions.
• Familiarity with distributed infrastructure and highly available systems at scale.
• Experience designing and developing APIs, working with Content Management Systems, and Design Systems.
• A passion for efficiency and collaboration, with a history of establishing great relationships across UX, Engineering, Product Management, Product Marketing, Sales, Data, and SEO teams distributed across multiple time zones.
• You are comfortable working with senior stakeholders (Director level and up), both technical and non technical.

 

It would be great if you had experience with:

• Working in an agency or creative environment delivering large-scale, multi-language websites, microsites, landing pages, and campaigns with complex internationalization and localization requirements.
• A deep understanding of one or more specific client-side areas like animation, web performance, or accessibility for example.
• Experimentation and evaluation methodologies to help inform decisions with real-world data.
