When discussing our tech careers, we talk a lot about our skills, and sometimes we even talk a little bit about money. But we very seldom talk about one of the biggest factors that shapes our opportunities and our advancement: power. The dynamics of how decisions are made, who has control in a situation, when you have the potential to advance in a role, and even what the strategy of an entire organization will be are all decided by the power that individuals wield within an institution or a community.

In this talk, we’ll cover a bit of how to understand hard and soft power, and offer a unique glimpse of the view from the point of view from someone who’s had power: as a CEO, a founder, a manager, and a decision-maker.

Find out how power is wielded behind closed doors and in board rooms, and how understanding and anticipating those decisions can help you understand power, gain power, and maybe even wield the power you’ll realize you already have.
