Conway’s law states “Any organization that designs a system (defined broadly) will produce a design whose structure is a copy of the organization's communication structure.” Attempts to mitigate its impact often involve reorganization into a new structure deemed closer to the ideal.

However, this approach tends to replace old problems with new ones as novel organizational constraints on communication emerge.

This talk gives an individual perspective on how staff+ engineers are uniquely positioned to help mitigate many of the negative tradeoffs associated with their company’s organizational structure. For example, by creating casual opportunities to talk shop with peers from teams or departments they don’t usually collaborate with.
